Role Summary
U.Group’s Taxonomist (Remote) practice guides the design, delivery and governance of useful, usable content. As part of the Experience group, we help mission-driven organizations transform their digital products, properties and services.

We’re looking for a content architect to work with a federal homeland security agency to modernize its systems and services.

In this role, you’ll organize the shape, structure and application of content. You’ll organize it so it’s easy to find. You’ll structure it so authors can create it once, publish it everywhere, and reuse it in the future. You’ll design intuitive tagging systems that enable dynamic delivery, automate curation and streamline management. And you’ll create repeatable systems for machines and people.

Day-to-day, you’ll collaborate with teams of experts from U.Group and our partner companies. You’ll work with business analysts, content strategists and designers to define a vision for success. And you’ll work with developers, engineers and designers to ensure solutions are built to spec.

As part of our human-centered Content Strategy practice, you’ll promote best practices and help your client improve their content operations. You’ll also contribute to the growth of your teams, colleagues and accounts.

You might be a good fit for this position if you’ve studied library and information science, have experience structuring content in JSON or XML, know SQL or are familiar with Drupal.

Key Objectives

Objective #1: Evaluate content structures, relationships and processes.
  • Identify client objectives, processes and measures of success through interviews, strategic workshops and other qualitative discovery methods.
  • Understand and assess current content ecosystems, structures and relationships through content inventories, content audits, database reports and other quantitative research.
  • Define a strategic vision, goals and measures of success for your client’s content architectures and processes to better meet organizational objectives and user needs.
  • Navigate complex organizational dynamics to build collaborative, trusting relationships with clients and colleagues, bringing them together around shared content priorities.
  • Live by our team values of clarity, inclusion, curiosity and honesty — giving clients, partners and peers the guidance they need to hear in a way that respects their intelligence and experiences.

  • Objective #2: Engineer enhanced content and information architectures.
  • Design domain and content models that support intuitive navigation, leverage reusable formats and scale across different platforms and environments.
  • Define fields, metadata, markup and schema to label and describe content in a way that makes it easy to find, search and display anywhere.
  • Create taxonomy vocabularies and other categorization systems to power content discovery, dynamic delivery and automated curation.
  • Define content standards and develop guidance for your clients, partners, and peers so they are empowered to maintain the content systems and architectures on their own.
  • Develop governance strategies that define how content moves through its lifecycle, who is responsible, how it will be cared for, and how quality and performance will be measured.
  • Work with developers and engineers to define migration plans, migrate content and conduct both manual and automated quality assurance.

  • Objective #3: Contribute to the growth of the Content Strategy practice at U.Group.
  • Promote U.Group’s way of working by making a strong case for iterative, human-centered content engineering on every project.
  • Create and contribute to team resources and training materials, including tutorials, guides, presentations, and toolkits.
  • Recognize when practices and processes are inconsistent or no longer serve the team and recommend paths forward to improve effectiveness.
  • Participate in and facilitate regular critique sessions and workshops, both internally and with stakeholders, to gather feedback and ensure high-quality delivery.
  • Contribute to business development strategies and proposals to capture new business and grow successful multi-year account strategies.
